This 90-minute interactive, whole-school accredited training programme provides school staff with up-to-date and relevant information on anaphylaxis, allergy and asthma. These conditions are taught together because they are closely related and frequently coexist.
The programme is designed to support schools in meeting the requirements of Benedict’s Law and covers the key areas set out within the DfE’s 2026 Allergy Awareness in Schools guidance, helping staff understand their responsibilities for supporting pupils with allergies and reducing the risk of allergic reactions within the school environment.
The training provides an understanding of asthma, how to recognise asthma symptoms and how to respond appropriately to an asthma attack. It then explores allergy awareness, including common allergens, recognising allergic reactions and the identification and emergency treatment of a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).
Practical demonstrations of how to use an asthma inhaler and adrenaline auto-injectors, including EpiPen and Jext, are included. Staff will have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the different devices and understand how and when they should be used in an emergency.
The programme also covers best practice for emergency procedures, individual healthcare plans, the safe storage and accessibility of emergency medication, and appropriate arrangements for spare adrenaline auto-injectors. It considers practical measures schools can take to reduce exposure to known allergens and create a safer, more inclusive environment for pupils with allergies, while ensuring staff are prepared to recognise and respond promptly to an emergency.
