Asthma & Allergy-Friendly School Programme (includes Anaphylaxis)

The number of pupils with asthma and allergies is growing every year and the conditions are closely related. In addition, both conditions are potentially life threatening and unpredictable.

In line with Supporting Pupils with Medical Conditions at School (DfE 2015) it is essential that all schools have a robust management plan in place that ensures a safe and healthy learning environment for pupils with asthma and allergies. Our Asthma & Allergy-Friendly School Programme assists schools in meeting the statutory requirements.

The programme is designed and delivered by a team of specialist nurses who have current clinical practice in school nursing, and a wealth of experience working in partnership with schools.

The 5 P's

The Asthma & Allergy-Friendly School Programme incorporates current evidence-based practice and statutory requirements in 5 key areas.

  • Professionals (this includes all school staff)
  • Prevention (allergy avoidance protocol and strategies)
  • Peers (educating pupils across all year groups)
  • Pupil (pathways for pupils with asthma and allergies)
  • Policy (creating a school management plan)

HOW THE PROGRAMME WOKS

Schools are supported by a team of specialist nurses who provide bespoke training and resources on the identified 5 key areas of best practice.

Training is delivered virtually, and includes demonstrations on how to implement resources provided.

Schools may already have segments of good practice in place and only require support in one or more of the 5 P’s. For this reason, each of the 5 P packages are provided separately.

Additional Content for Asthma & Allergy-Friendly Schools

Managing medicines training is best practice for all staff who are responsible for managing and administering medication in school.

An accredited Managing Medicines eLearn course is included when schools sign up to all 5 key areas of the Asthma & Allergy-Friendly School Programme.  This interactive eLearn provides an overview of the legal responsibilities and requirements for the administration of medication in schools and will provide staff with full appreciation of their roles and responsibilities.

Staff will gain an understanding of the different medicine types, categories and routes. The safe handling, storage and administration of medication in the school environment, and importance of correct record keeping records is also covered.

Drop-in sessions are hosted by specialist nurses to answer questions, debrief incidents, discuss near misses & share best practice.
